Lake Michigan - Where Vacations Begin and Memories are Made
Lake Michigan is the only of the five Great Lakes of North America to be located entirely within the United States. It is the third largest of the Great Lakes in surface area (smaller than Lake Superior and Lake Huron). It is bordered from west to east by Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. The word "Michigan" is believed to come from the Ojibwa Indian word Michigan meaning, "great water". By comparison, Lake Michigan is slightly smaller that the state of West Virgina.
Vacation along Door County's Lake Michigan and the "lake effect" will follow you home. Bury your toes in the sand, catch up on your reading, fly a kite over the waves, run in the sand, build sand castles and watch the waves wash them away, catch a fishing charter.
Visit two of the most scenic parks in Wisconsin--Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park. Climb to the top of "Old Baldy" and view the lake. The contract from rocky cliffs where the waves have pounded out sea caves to the sandy beaches will amaze you, the homes along the shore are as varied as the natural scenery.
Be sure to stop at each of the lakeside communities where you will experience good food, fantastic shopping and true Door County hospitality.
