Carlsville

Most Door County settlers chose a community along the lake or the Bay, but the settlers of Carlsville chose to live inland.  Carlsville is located midway between Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor.

A cheese factor, school and genreal store comprised the town of Carlsville in the late 1860's.  Later a saloon and dance hall, as well as a blacksmith shop joined the business community.

The Irish were the first settlers in the town, but soon those of German heritage outnumbered them.  Karl was a popular name among German men, and at only time as many as six lived in the town.  So the German settlers gave the town its moniker, Karlsville, because of the (at that time)  high number of men in the community with the first name Karl.  The name was later changed to Carlsville.

Today, the businesses that make up the Carlsville community host Carlsville Days, a summer festival with a parade, horse show, tours of the local winery and the dairy farm/ice cream parlor, along with food, live music, and games for kids.
